What does Elective Mode allow you to do? By default, the attack buttons in Diablo 3 are bound to the following: Left mouse button, right mouse button, and the 1, 2, 3, and 4 keys on the keyboard. The skills in Diablo 3 fall into six categories. Elective mode allows the player to place multiple skills from the same category to their key bindings.

When you first start playing the game, it seems that you can only pick from a designated tree of 3-5 skills for each slot. But you can actually pick more than one skill from the same tree, and put them in different slots. To do this, you simply have to enable Elective Mode.

Elective mode lets you use any ability in any slot, thus allowing you to use more than one ability per each type. This option is rather hidden and a great deal of players would like it to be a bit more visible. A curious thing has happened in Diablo III that fits this mold. As a weird tweet has the community going into a confused laughing fit on why it’s happening. On the official Diablo III Twitter feed, a tweet noted that the upcoming Patch 2.6.0 would make the Elective Mode turned on automatically for all players.
